Saturday 8 March 2025 The Gray Project - a welcome return for this fantastic soul & funk band, now expanded from an 8 to a 10 piece! This soul/funk big band are a must see, especially if missed them when they were last here in 2023. Back by popular demand, they are led by drummer Billy Gray. The band has recently expanded from an 8 piece to a 10 piece. They say that their sole objective (or should it be soul?) is to fill the floor with irresistible urban grooves which appeal to the head, heart and feet! They go on to say…… “Not the usual Stax & Motown tunes, but something of a different nature. We play those songs which have been lost, but not forgotten; a tour of those rare funk and soul gems we instantly recognise when we hear them. Maybe you can’t name the tunes, but when the Gray Project fires up you’ll feel ‘em. Freddie’s Dead by the great Curtis Mayfield is smack-bang one of those. Or then again, how about Quincy Jones's Stuff Like That? We mine the rich seam of unique… Whether you want to chill to a funk version of Let’s Stay Together, or get down to Lady Day and John Coltrane, The Gray Project is the band with the plan.” Just sit, chill and tap your feet to their captivating sound, or get up and dance, you’ll want to! The Sam Kelly Trio - Top folk band not to be missed. Sam Kelly (guitars, voice), Jamie Francis (banjo) & Graham Coe (cello) Sam is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning Cornwall-based singer, song-writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Jamie Francis has made the banjo really cool. His virtuoso playing adds much to the overall sound. Sam and Jamie are best friends who met at Brighton at music college and have been collaborating ever since. Graham Coe is Edinburgh based and not only plays an excellent cello but teaches it, sings, composes, produces and is a sound engineer and photographer. Sam is working on a hotly anticipated new album, due for release in 2025. The album will feature Sam’s signature eclectic arrangements of traditional folk songs, seamlessly interspersed with stunning original music from the pen of Sam and his Lost Boys band collaborator and banjo virtuoso - Jamie Francis. The album will take the listener on an eclectic journey all the way from fantastical moonlit adventures of privateering and poaching, to introspective reflection & solemnity, as centuries old folk songs sit alongside modern themes of mental health and exploration of the inner self. Sam and Jamie have gained a reputation as one of the most innovative and important partnerships to come out of the UK folk scene in recent years, and this album promises to be a groundbreaking addition to their impressive portfolio. |
