Our latest improvements:
The NHS vaccination centre reminded many of us how fortunate we are to have a community centre in our village which offers such flexibility to meet the unexpected. The building dates from the mid-seventies when the original burnt down and whilst the interior continues to be attractive, it is over 20 years since any significant attention was paid to the exterior. Many people have noticed how the roof and the cladding are beginning to look in need of a good dose of TLC and that the front car park is in need of attention.
The good news from the Trustees of Debenham Village Hall & Playing Field Trust is that both issues are now being tackled.
A major exterior refurbishment project is well and truly underway.
Duncan & Sons are undertaking the work which includes new roof covering, external windows and doors, improved insulation, exterior cladding, improved ventilation and heating, and an extension to the storage area. The project will ensure that Debenham Community Centre continues to be an attractive high quality, flexible venue which will serve the needs of future generations in Debenham and the surrounding area.
Where does the money come from? Applications to funding bodies were first made in May 2019 and an important stage was reached in 2020 when Debenham Parish Council committed £20,000, spread over two years, to the project. This proved to be a catalyst, unlocking much larger contributions from Community Business Fund who distribute lottery money and Viridor Credits who distribute Landfill Tax money. Mid Suffolk District Council have been very supportive with a Capital Grant, a contribution from Section 106 funds and we await a final decision on a bid to Community Infrastructure Levy. Councillors Matthew Hicks, Kathie Guthrie and Suzie Morley are all supportive of the project.
Quite separate to the refurbishment project is the front car park and there is clear commitment from the trustees that this will be tackled later this year. Exact timing will be confirmed nearer the time.
